Are you wasting the most nutritious part of the avocado?

Avocado pit seed

First it’s tricky to get it out. Then equally awkward to get off the knife safely. But it turns out the avocado seed could be the part of the fruit that’s the best for us.

With more anti-oxidants than most fruit or vegetables and a healthy dose of soluble fibre as just two of it’s major health benefits, we should be throwing it in the blender, not the bin.

HOW TO MAKE GROUND AVOCADO SEED

All you need is a powerful blender and an avocado.

1. Remove the seed carefully.

2. Use a large sharp knife to cut the seed. Do this with care! It should be soft enough to cut through.

3. Peel the dark skin from the seed.

4. Chop the seed up a little more and then put into a blender to create ground avocado seed.

HOW TO STORE GROUND AVOCADO SEED

The best way to store it is in an airtight container in the freezer. Then you can ensure it stays as fresh as possible and help yourself to it when you want it.

THREE WAYS TO USE GROUND AVOCADO SEED

The Ground seed doesn’t taste very nice by itself. It’s quite dry and bitter. That’s why it’s best to mix it with other ingredients. Here are a few ways we’ll be using it at Reset Button Retreat:

IN SMOOTHIES

You can add a tablespoon of Ground Avocado seed to a smoothie/green juice, as long as you have some strong flavours in the smoothie, you will hardly notice the taste.

Some flavours that are strong enough to cover up the taste: cinnamon, blueberries, banana, pineapple, apples, vanilla, raspberries, ginger, mint.

SPRINKLED

The bright orange colour looks fabulous sprinkled over salads. Just make sure it’s mixed with other flavours. We love to mix it with freshly ground black pepper and sprinkle it on a poached egg.

IN SAUCES

If you are cooking a hot meal, a ragu sauce or a curry you can add a tablespoon or two of the Ground Avocado Seed for a healthy dose of soluble fibre without changing the flavour.
